Operational efficiency is defined as the integrated processes, methods and procedures followed by an organization for a complex business environment. To become a high-performing workplace, an organization must have the basic elements of workplace excellence. 



Why Professional Working Environment Important for The Banking Industry in Sri Lanka?

The banking sector of Sri Lanka which is regulated by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and currently has 24 licensed commercial banks and 06 licensed special banks operating across the country has been facing economic turbulence, inflation and an unstable government a decade ago in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Easter terrorist attacks. The banking industry was able to maintain some level of stability during this period but faced structural and operational issues within the organization.

Therefore, this article will discuss the role of Human Resource Management for the excellence of workplace in Banking Industry Sri Lanka.

Employee Engagement

Employee engagement is crucial in banking, where employees' commitment directly impacts on service quality and customer satisfaction. High engagement levels lead to increased productivity and lower turnover rates (Khatri & Gupta, 2016).

Leadership and Line Management were not connected with the employees during the crises, which decreased productivity as well as the quality of the services provided at that time. Non-Awareness since Strategical practices, procedures and policies were not passed to the branch level employee.



Training and Development

Continuous training and skill development are essential due to rapid technological advancements and regulatory changes in the banking sector. Organizations investing in employee development typically see enhanced performance and service delivery (Perera, 2020).


Lack of investment in employees always creates an inadequate working environment and demotivation, dissatisfaction in jobs often increases. On the other hand, lack of training and development caused the high compliance risk, Skill gaps such as less innovations, low teamwork sprit among staff.  




Diversity and Inclusion

Promoting diversity and inclusion within the workforce enhances creativity and decision-making. A diverse environment is particularly beneficial in understanding and serving a varied customer base (Seneviratne, 2018).


Stagnation of Competitiveness can be caused in this situation, especially banks were tending biases in recruitment, promotions and increments during the particular period. The same practice has been noticed and overviewed in few institutions still. These circumstances produced a negative reputation of banks as well as misunderstanding among staff. 



Work-Life Balance

Establishing work-life balance initiatives can lead to higher job satisfaction and employee retention. Banks that support flexible work arrangements often see improved morale and commitment (Jayasinghe, 2019).

During the inflation as well as pandemic banks HRM’s implemented the new work shifts and remote working system. But due to the sickness, transportation problems, branch reach and dependents in family most bankers struggled to balance work and personal life. This has occurred many disadvantages such as Health issues, Negative impact on mental health, Employee Burnout and Stifled career growth.

Workplace excellence in the Sri Lankan banking sector is vital for fostering a productive, engaged, and satisfied workforce, leading to improved customer service and organizational performance.
